It's Texas, baby!

This is a page created to share a lit bit about the time I am spending in Austin. How did I, a teacher from Southern Brazil (São Leopoldo), get here? Read on and I will tell you everything!

It all started back in the end of 2019, when the Brazilian government announced the opportunity I had been waiting for a long time: to study at a university in the United States. I immediatelly applied and some weeks later my application was accepted.

As all very good adventure stories, there was a set back just around the corner. I am sure you can already imagine what I am talking about. That's right, Covid reached all parts of the globe and the program was put on stand by. That was pretty frustrating, but I was obviously more worried about keeping me and my family healthy.

Those two enduring pandemic years passed by and we survived one challenge after the other. Getting back to school was definetely hard. We learned how to deal with students who were depressed, anxious, and excited in our classes. We teachers had to re-educate ourselves to be there for them.

Then 2022 arrived and with it wonderful news; the program was reactivated and those who still wanted to participate had to reapply. I am sure I was one the first ones to do that. After taking a TOEFL test, gathering documents, waiting, waiting, and waiting a bit more it finally happened.

That's how I got to Austin and I can't wait to tell you everything I have been learning here.

First week in Austin

  The tower at University of Texas in Austin So, here I am, in Austin, Texas. I arrived here on January 16th along with 35 other teachers from all over Brazil and we will stay until the end of February studying at the University of Texas at Austin. We have classes every day, from 9am to 5pm, with a 1h30-hour lunch in the middle. When we travel to a different country it's common to become enthusiastic in the first days. It's like you are not going to have the time to see everything you planned to see. That's what most of us did. Many teachers went out every evening to go shopping. And obviously many of us were exhausted by the end of this first week. That's understandable, we want to make the most of it. At the Lady Bird Lake So far, I have not seen much of Austin. American Way of Life

 My group and I have been in Austin for over a month now. It's time enough to start analyzing different aspects of the American way of life with a less biased perspective. The honeymoon phase is over, so flaws or differences become clearer and clearer.  We learned that Americans pursue happiness and success and are usually encouraged to build their own path to achieve this. I could see that the structure the country offers makes it easier. One example of this is the school we visited. Although it is far from being excellent when compared to other places, students have access to musical instruments, laptops, and sports equipment that students in Brazil will never dream of getting close to. On the other hand, I was a little shocked that the classroom doors were locked. I also heard they have drills to prepare them for the event of a shooting.
